The 1930s and 40s were probably the most important decades of all during the twentieth century, shaping the destiny of virtually the entire world. Although the Second World War did not break out until 1939, the clouds of despair had been gathering for years beforehand as dictators Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini prepared their respective countries for war whilst at the same time talking peace with their eventual enemies. This album tells the story of the 14 or so years between 1934 and 1948, utilizing actual radio broadcasts of the time and linked together with running commentary by radio presenter John Snagge. Thus we hear the report of the sudden explosion that engulfed the German airship Hindenberg as it prepared to dock in New Jersey, Neville Chamberlain’s announcement that he had secured ‘peace in our time’ some six months or so before the war broke out, Winston Churchill’s rallying calls to the country, the heinous Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour, the liberation of Paris, the eventual end of war in Europe and later in the Pacific followed by new problems to contend with, such as the demand for Indian independence, the launch of the state of Israel and, perhaps to give the world hope for the future, the Olympic hymn being sung at the London Games of 1948.
