The career of Mario Lanza fell into two distinct camps – at Hollywood he sang popular music for a series of hugely successful films, whilst he also toured the world and gave concerts performing more ‘serious’ work. As such, Mario is widely considered to have been one of the best tenor voices the world has ever seen. Although the start of his career was interrupted by the outbreak of the Second World War, he had just signed a contract with Columbia Concerts and so it was decided he would be better employed entertaining the troops. After the war he toured with the Bel Canto Trio before winning a contract with MGM to make a series of films. 'Be My Love', from The Toast Of New Orleans became his first number one hit single, and further successes over the next few years included 'The Great Caruso' and 'Because You’re Mine'.
