Stanley Holloway first performed live in 1907 at an end-of-the-pier show but was soon recruited by noted British comedian Leslie Henson to feature in his concert party. After the First World War, during which he had served in an infantry regiment, he returned to entertainment and scored a major success with 'The Co-optimists' which ran from 1921 to 1927 and was then filmed.
Stanley became best known for his comedy song and monologue routine which he launched in 1929, introducing the characters Old Sam and Young Albert, the best bits of which are to be found on this album. Stanlet later became something of a film star, featuring in many of the Ealing comedies of the immediate post-war period as well as becoming a star on Broadway through the production of 'My Fair Lady.
